Prepare for Winter Weather

With severe weather in the forecast, follow the tips below to help prepare.

Power Outages

If you experience an outage or see downed trees or power lines, report them by calling Phone: 678-407-6675 (After hours: Call Phone: 770-339-2410)

  • Power will be restored as soon as it’s safe for crews to begin repairs. Please be patient, as strong winds may delay restoration efforts.

Charge Devices 

Charge cell phones and devices while you can. Extended power outages are anticipated.

Secure Loose Items

Secure loose items like trash bins, patio furniture, and outdoor umbrellas to prevent damage from high winds.

Stay off the Roads

Plan to stay off the roads. Travel may become unsafe due to fallen trees, high winds, and icy conditions.

Flooding Risks

Flooding may occur during some storms. Be sure to avoid entering standing water areas. Place sandbags in front of doorways if you expect flooding.

Preparing for a Winter Storm

  1. Make a plan, including a plan for critical medical situations
  2. Weatherproof your home
  3. Have your chimney or flue inspected each year
  4. Install a smoke detector and a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector
  5. Keep an easy-to-read thermometer inside your home
  6. Create an emergency car kit
  7. Listen to weather forecasts, and check your supplies
  8. Bring your pets indoors
  9. Get your car ready
  10. Use care with generators

Warming Stations

Gwinnett County will open warming stations for residents to receive temporary, overnight relief when temperatures reach 35 degrees and below.

Residents who visit the sites will be able to warm up, eat a meal, and get some rest. The warming stations will be available from 6:00pm until 7:00am.
